Climate Smart Agriculture

Climate change has led to prolonged drought conditions and loss of soil fertility in parts of Africa. In the past Uganda has been known as the food basket of East and Central Africa but the country is slowly loosing this status as climate change takes toll on this once fertile country. We have seem loss of soil fertility, mudslides and landslides especially in the eastern part of the country where we work. This added to the COVID-19 lockdown, has led to loss of thousands of jobs contributing to huge unemployment creating a looming time bomb in Uganda’s urban centers.

Women and children are the victims of climate change in Uganda. They are the ones who till the land, fetch water and are responsible for feeding the families, therefore any change in weather conditions disproportionately affects them. This is compounded by additional challenges for women, such as cultural norms limiting women’s active involvement in Agriculture and women in Uganda only owning 4% of the land.

We are empowering urban women in Jinja through Climate Smart Agriculture with the aim of creating climate resilient communities which can thrive regardless of the change in weather.

The overall objectives of this program are:

  • Enhance food security in the country through skilling communities in how to grow fresh vegetables.

  • Enhance the economic well being of women and young people through vegetable growing and selling.

  • Teaching communities how to use small spaces to produce fresh vegetables and food

  • Help in greening cities and rural settings through agroforestry

We are changing the narrative of thinking that agriculture should only be practised in wide spaces, through the utilisation of small spaces where production isn’t reliant on rainfall.
