March 8th every year, the world celebrates the International Women’s day . Tonight, we turn our attention to some of the women who have made strides in the conservation of Nature and in the fight against Climate Change. There are hundreds of undocumented women across the world who are making a positive impact on both the environment and daily lives of people around them. Doreen Babirye Kayemba is one enterprising sensation, a Go –Getter, a workaholic and farmer at the same time. Currently pursuing her Degree in Medicine, Doreen juggles studies with having to run her own Agri-Business and Sustainable Empowerment Scheme for rural women in western Uganda.
Her love for Nature forced her enrol for an Internship with our sister organisation- The Schools Tree Project where she learnt the deep intricacies of practical Climate Activism and Climate Smart Agriculture. First forward into the future, she established her own Vegetable Garden, perfecting it with all the skills she learnt during her Internship stint.
Through her Organisation, Garden Foods Foundation, Doreen is imparting Climate Smart Agricultural skills to women farmers in Bushenyi District , situated in western Uganda.
The soft spoken Activist says that ‘ empowering women in modern farming, Agro- Forestry and sustainable land management practices important if we are to alleviating poverty among rural women while conserving the Environment at the same time in Uganda’’.
